From 1980 Geoff began to paint full time and travelled to Europe in 1983 and NY 1985, 86 and 87. From this time he was gaining confidence with gouache on paper and from the mid 1980’s, in oils. He drew inspiration from WC Piguenit’s dark green mosses, translucent waters and scattering of broken logs, and later Constable and Turner. As a child he had grown up in near New Town Rivulet and Fern Tree. Later he would paint in regions behind the Mt Wellington and , as he said, he has spent much of his life “beneath a mountain which is of iconic reference to me’.
