This painting depicts a settler's camp adjacent to land granted to Haughton Forrest in 1876 before he emigrated to Tasmania from his address in The Strand, London. He immediately sold the grant because it was clear that it would require effort and substantial capital to develop. The new owner subsequently opened what became the leading tin mine in Australia. The painting is of a mining scene and is said to be at Brisies Mine on Cascade River below Brisies Dam, with the scene depicting tarring of water pipes used for sluicing tin.
Forrest painted most of his inaccessible depictions in the Tasmanian wilderness, from photographs taken by Beattie. The Beattie photograph (entitled Camp Maestris, Mount Dundas (State Library Tasmania) presently held by the State Library Tasmania. Haughton Forrest painted more than one version of Mackey’s Camp, an very close version is depicted in colour plate 32, George Deas Brown Haughton Forrest 1982 Malakoff Fine Art Press, p155.
Colville Gallery is grateful to acknowledge the research and involvement of Geoff Ayling, Principal Researcher, of The Forrest Project, for their work is establishing a credible and credited database specifically cataloguing the works of this important Tasmanian artist.
