Simpkinson de Wesselow Francis Guillemard (1819 – 1906) Britain Australia
Simpkinson De Wesselow, navel officer and artist arrived in Hobart in 1844 to work at the Ross Bank magnetic observatory. Along with two others, he was responsible for recording observations on an hourly basses. He worked and lived at the observatory, which still stands in the grounds of government house, and the sight was significant to the many sketched and watercolours he produced in Hobart. This site offered expansive views of the Derwent and Mt Wellington and was also close to the location of his 360 panorama Hobart town in 1948.
In 1845 and 1846, Simpkinson exhibited in the Hobart Town Art Exhibition with local artists such as John Skinner Prout, Lord Bishop Francis Nixon, and GTWB Boyes, as well as convict artists Thomas Griffith Wainewright and Thomas Bock. He established firm friendship with the circles who had known his aunt, Lady Jane Franklin, all thought she left Tasmania several months before his arrival.
Simpkinson painted avidly during his time in Hobart and also when travelling with Prout throughout Tasmania, Flinders Island and Victoria.
He returned to England at the end of 1848 where he would later inherit the name de Wesselow. The part of the 200 or so works of art he created in the colonies were stowed in a case until 1900 when he donated them to The Royal Society of Tasmania on hearing of their wish to acquire “relics of the past history of Tasmaina”.
While Simpkinson never exhibited in England, his colonial landscapes are testament to his competence of observation and commitment to watercolour, and provide an important record of Tasmanian landscape.

Haughton Forrest (1826-1925), artist, was born France, and his family forced to flee to Jersey, England, on the commencement of the French revolution in 1830. Haughton was subsequently educated in Jamaica, where his father had extensive sugar plantations, and at a military college at Wiesbaden, Germany. From 1858 Forrest’s life was spent on the Isles of Wight and Man and in southern England where he spent much time yachting and painting marine subjects, some of which were reputedly commissioned by the Prince of Wales (King Edward VII).
In 1875 Forrest took up a grant of sixty acres (24 ha) in Parana, southern Brazil, but finding conditions unsuitable returned to London. Next year he migrated with his family to take up a grant of 100 acres (40 ha) in north-eastern Tasmania. Later he moved to Sorell where he obtained municipal appointments as bailiff of crown lands and also superintendent of police. in 1881 he moved to Wellington Hamlets, near Hobart.
Forrest spent the rest of his life after 1881 fully devoted to his art, painting many fine marine subjects and landscapes. His output, which spanned some seventy years, and varied from small oils, painted on board, to large canvases. The marine paintings were usually of stormy scenes in which the vessels were meticulously detailed and the foam-crested breakers remarkably green and translucent. By contrast, his landscapes were peaceful, with mystical backgrounds of hazy blue or purple mountains. In 1899 Forrest's views of Mount Wellington and Hobart, in conjunction with the photographs of J.W.Beattie formed the first set of pictorial stamps produced in Australia..
Forrest died on 20 January 1925 at Melton Mowbray.

Estimate: $800 - $1,000
In 1991, the University of Tasmania received a bequest from the estate of the artist-lecturer, Rosamond McCulloch who had taught at the Tasmanian College of the Arts during the 1950s and 1960s. Rosamond McCulloch's wish was that her bequest should be used to assist a graduate of the School of Creative Arts to travel overseas.
In the spirit of the bequest, then, the University now has a permanent base in Paris. The $100,000 bequest was used to purchase a studio in the world-renowned studio complex, the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris. The Cité is situated on the right bank of the river Seine, adjacent to Notre Dame on the Ile de la Cité and close to all of the main Paris galleries including the Louvre.
