Catalogue Details

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1931. Alasdair graduated - Dip. Design & Crafts from Edinburgh College of Art in 1957, specialising in glass engraving under Helen Monroe-Turner. Moving to Norway, at Hadelands Glassworks, Alasdair gained practical experience and researched new engraving techniques with designers Willy Johansen, Severin Brorby and Arne Jon Jutrem.
In 1973, returned to Scotland establishing a studio with Strathearn Glass Company, Perthshire. Most of the work was of a commission nature including gifts to the Norwegian Royal Family.
Invited in 1979, for Western Australia’s 150th Anniversary Celebrations, Alasdair fell in love with the place. The family emigrated there and in 1980 they established The Gordon Studio situated in Fremantle. Initially, producing architectural and commercial commissions in addition to their own work. Alasdair has exhibited nationally and overseas, and his commissioned work includes many pieces for presentation to Royalty, public and corporate bodies. The Studio is now involved almost exclusively, with one-off art works.
Alasdair now concentrates on the ancient art of Cameo Glass, which starts with a specially blown vessel ‘blank’ (with several layers of glass, each of a different colour) Using an engraving wheel, portions of the outer layers are slowly and selectively carved back to reveal a multi-coloured design standing proud of the surface. The effect is something like a finely carved ivory tableau against a subtle translucent coloured glass background. “My own brass engraving lathe, which I use with pleasure an a daily basis, was manufactured in Blottendorf, Bohemia around 1870. It seems probable it arrived in Sydney about 1880 along with one of several prominent glass engravers from England. It came into my possession in 1995.”

Catalogue Details

Born Melbourne and studied at RMIT, Walker came to Hobart 1947. Typical of the period he went overseas for further experience and studied under Henry Moore and further in Italy working in two Italian sculptural foundries between 1953 and 1970 before returning home and establishing his home and own foundry at Campania. He pioneered a unique method of mould heating for the lost wax process that enabled him to produce large scale sculptures very economically. Walker has created a unique presence of major public works predominately in Hobart however it is very rare to have available a work of a smaller scale and also to have one available for acquisition.
A selection of major public commissions since 1969 include
Westpac Fountain Sculpture 'Tidal Pools Sydney 1970, relocated to lower Sandy Bay 2013
Entrance Façade, CBA, Martin Place, Sydney 1970
Antipodean Voyage, French Memorial fountain, Huon Pine, Botanical Gardens Hobart, 1972

Many of these works are classified under National Heritage Register. Living close to Hobart and the connections to the Southern Ocean and Antarctic along with his love of birds and marine life, saw many of the works encompass natural studies of fauna.
