This painting depicts the artist’s father’s country (Warlpiri). It features two Water Serpents. Legend has it, one became territorial over its place and bit the intruder. Thiis started a battle that created a large clay pan plain. The commotion made a big noise that interrupted a women’s ceremony and all the women came to watch the two snakes fight it out. The oval shapes are the female snake’s eggs.
This work was a pivotal work from a sell out exhibition.
Luritja artist, Pansy Napangardi was born about 1945, growing up on a mission settlement at Haasts Bluff in Central Australia, moving to Alice Springs in 1989. Her work gives voice to her traditional beliefs and are remarkable in their use of colour with blues, pinks and greens.
Her work has been exhibited at the 1988 Brisbane Expo, as well as solo exhibitions including Sydney Opera House 1998 Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi 1998, 2004, Melbourne, and featured in numerous group exhibitions including ‘Mythscapes’ National Gallery Victoria 1989, ‘Karnta’ New South Wales Art Gallery, Sydney 1991 and ‘Papunya Tula: Genesis & Genius’ 2000, United Nations Exhibition, New York 1999, Galerie DAD, France 2004, ‘Dreaming Their Way’ National Museum Women in the Arts, Washington DC 2006, Papunya Paintings’ National Museum Canberra 2007.
In 1989 Pansy won the 6th National Aboriginal Art Award and in 1993 won the Northern Territory Art Award.
