Michael Kmit was born 1910 in Ukraine, arriving in Sydney in 1950, dying there in 1981. He studied
at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow and taught painting in Lvov in Poland and Landeck in Austria,
he also worked in Italy, Paris and Vienna, before arriving in Australia.
Kmit quickly found success in Australia, In the 1953 shows of the Sydney Group at David Jones, and
exhibiting alongside prominent iconic Australian artists including Arthur Boyd, Russell Drysdale,
James Gleeson Paul Haefliger and Justin O'Brien.
His work combining Byzantine iconography with peasant craft, soon brought him into prominence.
He was awarded the Blake Prize 1953, Perth Prize 1954, the Critics' Prize for Contemporary Art
1955, the Darcy Morris Memorial Prize 1956 and the Sulman Prize 1957.
Kmit moved to the USA in 1958. When he returned to make Australia his permanent home in 1965.
Kmit’s works are represented in the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, Art Gallery of New
South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Art Gallery of South
Australia, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery University collections in Sydney and Brisbane, Mertz
Collection, USA and many regional galleries. Kmit’s significant contribution to the Australian abstract
movement was acknowledged by Australian art historians, with reproductions of his works
appearing in books on contemporary Australian art.

Miss Dougherty Estate, Mrs Ashton Jones's sister. Newlands was owned by Mr FM Innes 1860-1882, the Tower LHS constructed in 1845 visible , Mrs Ashton Jones said that the painting was done by Falkiner, probable Daniel Falkiner, a family friend and visitor after arriving from Ireland.

Charles Pettitt (1831-1885) Born into the Birmingham family of artists, Charles Pettitt was a landscape painter who worked in oils and travelled extensively throughout the British Isles to paint his landscapes. He loved the mountains of the Lake District, Wales and Scotland. He exhibited at the Suffolk Street Galleries, London, the British Institution, and other provincial galleries. His work is held in York Art Gallery.
