Benjamin Edwin Minns (1863-1937), watercolourist and black-and-white artist. At 17, , Minns went
to Sydney where he met Charles Conder , studied at Sydney Technical College and Art Society of
New South Wales, and had lessons from Julian Ashton, an accomplished plein air painter, also joined
the society's Sketch Club with Ashton, Phil May and Nerli.
In 1895 Minns and his wife went to England, sketching in England and France, and exhibited
successfully at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in London,
and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts (New Salon) in Paris.
Minns returned to Australia in 1915 and exhibitions in the early 1920s of watercolours in Sydney
and Melbourne won him recognition as one of Australia's foremost watercolourists. His usual
signature was B. E. Minns. He was a founder in 1924 and first president (until 1937) of the Australian
Water-Colour Institute. He was also a member of the Society of Artists, Sydney, and with Lambert
and Longstaff was among the artists commissioned by the Art Gallery in 1928 to paint a self-portrait.

Painter of portraits, miniatures, watercolours, china also woodcarver. Born Vera Lindsay Whitesides
at Oatlands, where her father was manager of the Commercial Bank of Tasmania. Lost her hearing at
the age of 7, and with other family and freiends was educated by a series of governesses, of whom a
Miss Glover may have encouraged her in painting and drawing. The family moved to Hobart in 1896.
Studied under Benjamin Sheppard and Lucien Dechaineux at the Hobart Technical College 1909-19.
Received commissions to paint miniatures including two governors sire Francis Newdegate and Sir
William Allardyce. Ceased painting in 1931 possibly due to failing eyesight.

Haughton Forrest (1826-1925), artist, was born France, and his family forced to flee to Jersey, England, on the commencement of the French revolution in 1830. Haughton was subsequently educated in Jamaica, where his father had extensive sugar plantations, and at a military college at Wiesbaden, Germany. From 1858 Forrest’s life was spent on the Isles of Wight and Man and in southern England where he spent much time yachting and painting marine subjects, some of which were reputedly commissioned by the Prince of Wales (King Edward VII).
In 1875 Forrest took up a grant of sixty acres (24 ha) in Parana, southern Brazil, but finding conditions unsuitable returned to London. Next year he migrated with his family to take up a grant of 100 acres (40 ha) in north-eastern Tasmania. Later he moved to Sorell where he obtained municipal appointments as bailiff of crown lands and also superintendent of police. in 1881 he moved to Wellington Hamlets, near Hobart.
Forrest spent the rest of his life after 1881 fully devoted to his art, painting many fine marine subjects and landscapes. His output, which spanned some seventy years, and varied from small oils, painted on board, to large canvases. The marine paintings were usually of stormy scenes in which the vessels were meticulously detailed and the foam-crested breakers remarkably green and translucent. By contrast, his landscapes were peaceful, with mystical backgrounds of hazy blue or purple mountains. In 1899 Forrest's views of Mount Wellington and Hobart, in conjunction with the photographs of J.W.Beattie formed the first set of pictorial stamps produced in Australia..
Forrest died on 20 January 1925 at Melton Mowbray.

William Charles Piguenit (1836-1914), was the first Australian born ‘professional artist’
Born Hobart he received some lessons from Frank Dunnett, a Scottish painter. From 1850 he was a draftsman in the Survey Office and in 1867 he published six lithographic plates in The Salmon Ponds and Vicinity, New Norfolk. In 1872 he resigned from the Survey Office to devote himself to landscape painting and in 1874 travelled on foot to the Gordon River and painted the Arthur Range, Lake Pedder and Hell's Gates, in 1887 the government bought six of his works on the western highlands, now in the Hobart Art Gallery.
In 1875 Piguenit had moved to Sydney and contributed to exhibitions at the New South Wales Academy of Arts and held a one-man exhibition.
An enthusiastic explorer, he travelled widely looking for natural scenery, where he had 'the first opportunity of illustrating our mountain scenery from the points where it can be studied to the best advantage, from the bottom of the gorges instead of the summit of the ranges'.
He visited the Clarence River and the south coast of New South Wales and among other excursions went to the Tasmanian west coast and Lake St Clair in 1887.
In 1898 and 1900 Piguenit visited Europe and his work was included in the exhibition of Australian Art at the Grafton Galleries in London and the Paris Salon. In 1902 the New South Wales government commissioned him to paint Mount Kosciusko for £175 and £25 expenses. The first Australian-born artist of note, he delighted in mountain scenery and often chose dramatic subjects for his painting. In 1901 one of his finest canvases, 'Thunderstorm on the Darling' won the Wynne prize, Sydney; he also won several gold medals for his careful and sensitive observation of nature.

Simryn Gill was born in Singapore in 1959. She grew up in Port Dickson, Malaysia and now lives and
works in Sydney. She has exhibited widely in Australian and internationally including the 5th Istanbul
Biennial, Turkey; 'Transculture', 1995 Biennale of Venice; CCA Kitakyushu, Japan; Ikon Gallery,
Birmingham; Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki 2000. Gill represented Australia in the
2013 Venice Biennale, with the exhibition entitled Here Art Grows on Trees.
'A small town at the turn of the century' 1999-2000 is a series of 39 type C photographs taken by Gill
in the town the artist grew up in. The documentation of the people and place of ones past could be
highly nostalgic. Added to this is the moment at which Gill chose to document - the turn of the 20th
into the 21st century. Such references to time and memory, the past and the present are potent but
Gill has covered each of her subjects' heads with tropical fruit. Rather than being absurd or ironical
the head coverings move the images away from being portraits and into the broader realm of
context.
Gill's photographic work sits to some extent with that of Tracey Moffatt, Destiny Deacon, and Anne
Ferran because of her interest in memory, as well as relating to her instal0lations in concept and
content.
Gills work is represented in numerous major institutions including Solomon R Guggenheim Museum
NY, Museum of Modern Art NY Tate London, AGNSW, Queensland Art Gallery
